Working hard for chump change is seen as a fools error. Key is to notice that back in the 50's people who did study hard were seen as brains whereas now they are called nerds and as losers seen. Hollywood helps to create negative stereotypes of those who work to excess. The result is that people do not place much effort into becoming a success.
